Podcasts for the Field: Recommendations from Women in Food and Ag

Podcasts are changing the way many farmers spend their days in the field. They’re a great way to learn about farming practices, stay up to date on food system news, or to feel a sense of connection to other farmers through storytelling. In a recent Facebook post we asked women in our network what their favorite podcasts were. This list is a compilation of their comments, which you can read here.

Female Farmer Project

Beginning in the fall of 2016, The Female Farmer Project documents the rise of women in agriculture. We chronicle the stories of women who are creating change in our food system. Topics include farm financing, water rights, and an episode on veteran farmers is forthcoming.

Farmer to Farmer with Chris Blanchard

Are you a lifetime farmer, just getting started, or looking to take the leap? Well, this podcast is for you! In Defense of Plants

It would seem that most people don’t pay any attention to plants unless they are pretty or useful in some way. I reject this reality outright. Plants are everything on this planet. They have this amazing ability to use our nearest star to break apart water and CO2 gas in order to grow and reproduce. From the smallest duckweed to the tallest redwood, the botanical world is full of amazing evolutionary stories. I am here to tell those stories. PFI has only released one episode of their podcast but we are excited for more. Each week, staff member Nick Ohde will interview a different Practical Farmers member about their farm. We’ll hear from new and experienced; young and old; small and large; horticulture, livestock and row-crop farmers. We’ll talk with farmers about the issues most relevant to the farming community: the nitty gritty of growing and raising all sorts of plants and animals; on-farm research; protecting and improving soil and water quality; farm profitability; the challenges facing beginning farmers; building community in rural areas; and of course, food.
