Farm Field Day at Rolling Acres

7/19/10

Rolling Acres Farm near Atlantic, IA, will host a farm field day on Saturday, July 31 from noon to 3 p.m. The event will begin with a potluck at nearby Harrisdale Homestead, followed by a tour and discussion at Rolling Acres, a community-supported agriculture farm owned by Denise O’Brien and Larry Harris. Both events are free and open to the public.

The discussion at Rolling Acres will focus on the farm’s processes: planting, maintenance, marketing, harvesting, and preparation for distribution through the CSA, local restaurants, and institutions. Of special interest: the farm’s high tunnel and a cooling system, the CoolBot.

This is a family-friendly event but will be of particular interest to women farmers. Women, Food and Agriculture Network and Practical Farmers of Iowa are co-sponsors.

Rolling Acres is located on land that Larry grew up on. Both farms are part of the land that the Harris family settled more than 150 years ago. This is the fifth year that Larry and Denise have raised products for a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, in which community members pay a subscription fee in exchange for a weekly box of food from the farm. In addition, Larry and Denise raise white and heritage turkeys for sale to local and Ames customers, as well as Iowa State University and Grinnell College dining services. They also raise chickens for sale and for their own consumption.

Directions: Rolling Acres is one mile north of Harrisdale Homestead. Both are one mile east of Hwy 173, which is exit 54 off I-80. Addresses are 60182 Dallas Rd (Harrisdale Homestead) and 59624 Chicago Rd. (Rolling Acres), Atlantic.

Bring a dish to share at the potluck. Beverages and dinnerware will be provided.
